  1. I met darling Jane in the backyard of Derby St Semaphore in Adelaide. I can't remember what year it was - about 1999, but it was hot and we sat on straw bales in the backyard. And she moved in and became a fabulous house buddy - apart from burning the pots on a regular basis - which we ended up not minding because in all other ways she was so gorgeous.

  2. I was living in Suzy Stile's house in Derby St Semaphore. I had lived with Claire Ralfs and Amy Ralfs and Jutta Kulwikowski in Rankine Rd Torrensville. Jutta brought Jane to Derby Street as a potential new housemate.
It was the next day (Sunday) after my older sister, Denise's 40th which had been held at Derby St. We sat on the hay bales outside and chatted. Can't remember what about. We agreed to give living together a go.
So in moved Jane and Ky her big woolly dog who would trundle daily to the beach for a walk.

I remember her as loping and toffee coloured.

  3. Jane arrived at 24 Ethel street after driving from Alice Springs, I had heard about her from my sister Jutta who had met her recently on her trip to Alice Springs. Jutta, Marion Tait, Jane and I all sat around the Ethel street kitchen table and drank tea ate Jutta's wonderful food and got to know each other. Jane and I talked well together which was rare for me. Straight away we talked about doing a film which eventually we did do. We connected well and we had many more days like that at good old Ethel street kitchen table.

  4. When I first met Jane I swear she was wearing a flannelette shirt, though she later (strongly) denied this. On reflection I thought maybe it was a variation of the basic flannie. Recently, however, at a gathering, we saw photo evidence of a her being partial to flannelette at times in her life...and It suited her.

  5. I first met Jane in 1994 when we were studying Social Work together. She had recently returned from Alice Springs and seemed to me to be more Kafka than karma back then. We connected over books, writing, social justice and generally being in a university setting with all the time to hang out and contemplate. We both lived by the sea - she lived almost on the beachfront at Grange - I lived less close to the coast (there's probably a metaphor in there about how we lived our lives!). They were full days as we studied and tried to imagine how we could fuse our political and social (and even existential) beliefs into some sort of actual employment (easier said than done). I remember Jane then, hands in her pockets, an old weathered backpack on her shoulder and an expression on her face that I could never truly gauge (was it wry humour, amusement, judgement or relaxed acceptance?).

  6. I met Jane in a small hotel in Nairobi sometime during the autumn of 1989. We were both looking for friends and found we had a lot in common. Later on I met her again on the remote island of Lamu, on the Somali border, where we had a great time. She was such a lovely character, I am so sorry she is gone.

  8. I met Jane when I started working at an inner-city drop-in centre for homeless youths. I remember the very first night we met .... our shift finished around midnight and we locked up and walked to our respective cars(parked two minutes away) .... but somehow we never seemed to quite get there ... we just walked around and around the city waiting for the conversation to ease in order to part ... hours of sharing stories were stepped through the streets until we realised it was after 3am .... hahaha what a wonderful thing to re-find a friend
